This module is for first year students who are interested in continuing and deepening their experience and understanding of literature. It aims to extend the skills taught in English 101 so, once again, the module will include a range of genres – short fiction, poetry and a play – and will increase your knowledge of the literary conventions and interpretative strategies associated with those genres. Like English 101, this module also aims to equip students with skills in close reading and critical analysis.


Assessment includes a combination of take-home assignments (essays and exercises) and controlled assessment (in-class tests and writing, a final examination).

A Poetry reader will be produced by English Studies and the costs added to the course fee.

Who is this module for?

This module is designed to build on the knowledge and skills developed in English 101. It aims to give students the vocabulary and conceptual tools that will enable them to understand and discuss fiction, plays and poetry, and to extend their knowledge of literature.
